Upcoming 70th birthday CD releases

In celebration of Martha Argerich's 70th birthday, EMI and Universal Music are planning a few new releases later in May.

From EMI Classics there will be a 3-box collection entitled 'Martha Argerich Edition', comprising of all her recordings for EMI (without the Lugano recordings) in solo and piano duo works, concertos and chamber music, as well as a 3-CD compilation called 'The Sound of Martha Argerich'.
Universal Music will release three sets, one of which will be the last installment of the current Argerich Collection. All her recordings for (the label formerly known as) Philips will be in the fourth box set, including the legendary Rachmaninov 3 with Chailly, recordings with her duo partners Stephen Kovacevich and Nelson Freire, and the wonderful Schubert Arpeggione Sonata with Mischa Maisky.
And talking of Mischa Maisky, the cellist dedicates his latest CD to Martha in a 2-CD release entitled 'My Dearest Martha', with selections from their recordings of works by Bach, Beethoven, Chopin and Schumann.
The last release from Universal will be a DG compilation called 'The Art of Martha Argerich', a 3-CD set with highlights from her recordings for the Yellow Label. This set is richly illustrated with rare photographs, some of which have not been seen previously. Here's a sneak peek from the booklet.

  1. good news, especially in light of the cancellations of m.a.'s u.s. appearances...thanks...

  2. Hi, just a small correction - the 3 EMI boxes DO draw on the Lugano recordings; I've just got the solos/duos box and about 80% of it is from the Lugano sets. I've got that one plus the Philips (vol4) set: I must say that the DG people know how to produce something beautiful (with all the original covers on the CD sleeves), but the EMI sets are so cheap that if you've not alreay got a bulk of the material, they're well worth picking up.

    Great blog, btw.
